The Story:
One of the greatest parenting challenges of the 2020s is enjoying the benefits of the digital space while trying to fend off its disadvantages—for ourselves and our children alike. How can we remain more interesting than the magical world found on our children’s phones? By connecting with them often in the caring, understanding, and soulful sense of the word.

Artist’s Note:
It’s not easy for me to draw my own digital boundaries either, so I use a little help: I have tools that limit my app usage, and I’m reminded of their importance every day. No online experience can replace the moments lived in real life. Name one real-life experience from yesterday and one online experience, then compare the two.

Why “Time Capsule”?
I am painting this series for my children, hoping they will pass them down through generations. I want these works to act as a visual diary of their ancestors’ lives 10 or even 100 years from now—a legacy that inspires them to seek out their own moments of awe.
